Never, Ever Give Up - D.I.Y

It's a rather strange time for me at the moment as a graduate trying to get started in the creative industries. I have to admit, I had been feeling a bit downhearted about it all (ahem, a bit), but recently I have met so many people like me, and I realise that we are all in the same boat. So this is a little DIY to remind us all: chin-up chaps, and never EVER give up!

You will need: a paper bag, acrylic paint, scissors or a craft knife, and some form of stencils - I got these sponge letters from a local "everything" shop.

1. Cut off one side of the paper bag, leaving the handle on, so you are left with a sheet of brown paper with a ready made handle.
2. Choose your paint and print your chosen words on to the paper using the stencils/stamps. I chose a simple two colour design for extra emphasis :)
3. Let the paint dry and hang your art work up with the handle that's already attached. Easiest project ever!

You could also iron out the paper so it looks a bit neater, but I quite like the crinkled effect. My plan is to keep this and frame it when I don't need it as a reminder anymore.

Lots of love and happy crafting,

Retro Knitting Patterns

I set a goal for myself last week to make a real effort to learn how to knit properly. I have knitted a few things before (yes, mostly scarves) but I really want to learn more complex stitches and patterns. When I went home for the day a couple of weeks ago I gathered up as many supplies as I could from my mum and my nan, and as usual they had some absolute gems stashed away - like these retro knitting patterns! I can't wait to give the jumper a try.

5 Paper Craft Inspirations

This week I have been inspired by some really beautiful paper crafts - admittedly after watching Kirstie Allsop's Handmade Britain, oh how I love that lady! Here are a select few of the pretties that I've come across:

1. Elly Mackay - beautiful dream-like scenes, all of her work is so pretty it was hard to choose a favourite!

2. Anna-Wili Highfield - the most intricate paper sculpture I have ever seen! Her birds and horses have so much life!

3. Thomas Allen - really fun book art. His use of perspective is so impressive!

4. Jennifer Collier - this paper typewriter must have taken so many hours to make! I love the illustrations on the paper roll.

5. Matthew Sporzynski - a huge collection of paper creations ranging from food to politics! I love the block colours and the fun "everyday" subjects.

Be sure to check out the online portfolios of these wonderful artists and there are many more beautiful creations to see!

Salt and Pepper Squirrels

Letty, a lovely friend of mine, got these little guys for me for my birthday! My very first woodland creature salt and pepper shakers! Thank you Letty, I can't wait to find the perfect place for them to live :)
I love them and just had to share their cute little faces with the world.

That's all!

D.I.Y Autumn Candles

Here is a special guest DIY post from my lovely mum! These autumn  leaf candles are very easy to make and they look so pretty at night!

1. You will need: a collection of different sized mason jars, tissue paper, PVA glue and some dried leaves.
2. Brush the leaves on to the jar with PVA glue, making sure that they are well covered.
3. While the glue is still tacky, cover the jar in tissue paper and brush more PVA glue over the top of it to seal it. Leave to dry completely overnight.
4. Pop a tea-light candle inside and enjoy your pretty new autumn lantern!

Thanks for sharing Mum, now to run about collecting leaves before they all shrivel up in the frost!

This tutorial is Mum's own spin of a popular trend this season. Here is a little list of other mason jar/candle inspired projects that we both love:

Boot Sale Beauts

These are a find from a little while ago, but I just rediscovered them when looking for subjects to photograph for my new blog buttons. Aren't they sweet? I love a good abandoned Russian Doll rescue! I even found a set with the players of the Derby County football team on a trip to Prague this year... the perfect present for a certain boy!

Happy Weekend :)

P.S. I'm joining Sophie at Her Library Adventures for Flea Market Finds! Pop along to her lovely blog to see what everyone else has been rescuing.

A More-than-Lovely Birthday

Sunday was my 22nd Birthday and I had a cracking time (intended pun to become clear in a second).
Accompanied by a gathering of lovelies, I went to a funfair and fireworks display the night before. That's the best thing about an early November birthday - Fireworks Night! There were rides, teddy bears won, drinks drunk and sweets and birthday cake a-plenty!

This photo was taken by Jake, my lovely boyfriend who spoilt me rotten all day :) he got me a HUGE new fish tank for Warren (our little black moor fish) so that we can can get him a wife and some friends to swim around with. I can't wait until we get it up and running so I can share pictures with you all.

On the subject of birthdays, I would like to say a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Red Velvet and a congratulations to Elsie and all of her team. I know that the journey of the girls and Red Velvet has been a big inspiration to many of us bloggers across the world, and I am truly grateful to them for sharing their experiences with us.

Happy November everyone!

Old Vic Tunnels Design Competition

Here's a little something I have been working on this week... It's a design proposal for a new bar in the Screening Room of the Old Vic Tunnels - a competition in collaboration with Veuve-Clicquot. My inspiration was the story of the worlds oldest champagne that was found last year on a shipwreck at the bottom of the baltic sea. The design has a steam-punk vibe alluding to old explorers, inventors and everything "oldy-worldy".

The winner of the competition gets their design commissioned and an artist residency at the Tunnels! Fingers crossed :)
