Instagram Love

Well, well, well.... Now I know what all the fuss was about! I am LOVING instagram! Especially after reading Elsie's great post on iPhone App Mixology. It's so much fun playing with filters and fonts, I'm looking at photography in a whole new way! This is going to make my photo-a-day project WAY easier :)

Who else has the instagram bug? Leave your usernames below, I'd love to see your pics! You can find me @rachelemmagood....

Art Journal Challenge #4

CHALLENGE #4: Make up your own pattern and fill your pages with it. Play with different sizes, repetition, different colours and shapes.

This one is a bit easier than the last challenge... And a chance to have some real fun with it! Work big, don't worry about over complicating it and just fill a big space with patterns!

I'll share my attempt at this later on in the week. If you do play along, send in a picture or a link showing your work so others can admire it too :) and that includes if you have had a go at challenge #1 and #2 and #3 too!

We are coming to the end of journal month, so I will be going back to normal posting soon.  I have loved seeing other artists work, so I am going to continue the Sketchbook Showcase as a permanent feature on the blog. If you would like to share your work in the future, just drop me an email at

Would anyone like to see more journal challenges? I was thinking of carrying them on and posting a couple a month rather than every week if there were people interested!

When I Get an iPhone....

Today my friends is a very special day... For it is today that I finally cash in Barry the Blackberry for a shiny new iphone (as yet unnamed). Barry and I have had our ups and downs, but ultimately he has been good to me. A reliable phone, just not a very good SMART phone.

So in honour of this joyous occasion, I have collected together a few images from my "when I get an iphone" Pinterest board which has been keeping me going the last few weeks months.

I have already bought the retro cassette case! But I also love the typewriter... and EVERYTHING from Society 6 but I can't really afford them at the moment... AHH too much choice!

Who else has the iPhone bug? Silly question really...

I have a couple of journal challenge results to share today! Above is my attempt at challenge #3... It felt very rushed!! A 5 minute time limit is harder than I thought! And below are some "Brushes are Banned" challenges created by two of my lovely friends Anna and Sian. We had a very fun little craft-a-noon.

By Anna.

By Sian.

Has anyone else had a go at the challenge? Go on.... It's share time! Either drop me a link to a post showing your page or send some pictures to so I can make a collective post of the results.

Happy Journalling,

Morris Has Arrived!

I finally finished my first ever crochet project! Introducing.... Morris the Sensitive Panda! Granted, he looks a little bit different from the pattern, but I am very proud of him.
I think I'll have a go at granny squares next, who else is a new knitter or crochet-er?

Sketchbook Showcase: Bianca

Hi there, I'm Bianca, I blog at Goodnight Little Spoon. I am 21 and I live in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia and I love to collage. I'm very happy to be able to share some of my journall-y collag-y things in aid of Rachel's Journal Month. I've been journalling since early high school and I now study Contemporary Art at university - I'm really fortunate that I can often transfer my love of collage and journalling into my subjects.

I recently finished off my first Sketchbook Project journal. It was great fun and really good to have a deadline, but bittersweet to sent it away in the end. These are some pages from my sketchbook - my theme was "Time Traveller".

A few years ago I curated a little mail themed travelling journal that I sent around to some mail loving internet friends to add to. The contributions to it were awesome, though sadly, the nature of this kind of thing is that some people keep the journal for months and months without adding to it or passing it along, and that's where it's at now. These were a few of my pages:

My top 5 tips for collage and art journalling:

+ Use materials that you have around you. I find that my best work comes when I limit my supplies; I might choose one magazine, a handful of paper scraps from my drawers and a nice gel pen and see what I can come up with. Collaging isn't something that should have to cost you very much money. I keep receipts, ticket stubs, bus tickets, used envelopes, price stickers, found shopping lists, clothes tags, etc to use in future collages.

+ Get inspiration from others, but don't let it stifle your creativity. It is great to take inspiration from other people's collage styles. Some of my favourite collage artists are Peter ClarkJordan ClarkeBill ZindellLilianna PereiraJulian PacaudNatalie MalikKarena ColquhounBeth HoeckelDani Sanchis & Luci Everett.

+ Use different mediums. Try collaging onto a piece of wood, making a collage postcard, collaging onto index cards, book covers, cardboard boxes, envelopes, cards, post-it notes, on top of thrifted paintings, as well as into journals and on paper.

+ Experiment. Not everything you make has to be something you put on the internet or share with others. Don't feel like everything needs to be a work of art. Spend lots of time playing with materials. Learn what you like.

+ I think it's important to invest in (or make) a journal that you feel really comfortable with. I like a hard cover and really thick drawing quality pages.

I also find it fun to journal while watching TV or to take a bunch of supplies and go collage at the library or in the park (wind permitting!).

Some miscellaneous collages I've made:

I love making collages in the form of mix cd covers for friends:

Mail art is a great low-pressure way to collage - you cover an envelope or postcard with bits and pieces and then send it away to someone. A bit of travelling art.

This is my current journal:

I find journalling and collaging really therapeutic. Happy journalling!

.... I am not sure how to follow this post accept with WOW. Thanks SO much Bianca for sharing your beautiful collages with us, and for being the first in my sketchbook showcase series! I am completely in awe! Be sure to check out Bianca's blog Goodnight Little Spoon for more of her lovely work and words. What an inspiring lady!

If anyone is interested in sharing their sketchbook or journal here on the blog then please contact me by email ( I have decided to continue the feature after journal month so there is currently no limit to the number of slots :) so get journalling!

Art Journal Challenge #3

This one does exactly what it says on the tin!

CHALLENGE #3: Make a page in 5 minutes and 5 minutes only! Start your stopwatches...annnnd...GO!

I sometimes make my best work when I have a strict time limit... It stops all the faffing around and procrastinating. Also I find there is less pressure to make something absolutely perfect if you don't have enough time AND it takes the excuses away for not doing it... Everyone has 5 minutes in a day ;)

I will be sharing my attempt at this challenge next Friday, and I'd love to see what other people come up with too! If you do play along, send in a picture or a link showing your work so others can admire it too :) and that includes if you have had a go at challenge #1 and #2 too!

In other exciting news, on Monday I will be revealing the first of the peeks into artists sketchbooks series! I am so chuffed about this first one, as she is one of my favourite bloggers and is such a talented artist.... I can't wait to share her work with you all!

Until then, Happy Journalling!

Etsy Bests - Journal Edition

How could I not do an Etsy Bests journal special in journal month? Here's a collection of gorgeous handmade journals that I've come across on Etsy this week:

1. Lined Blue and Gold Journal from Anna Tovar.

2. Geometric Shapes A5 Notepad from Ribbon Squirrel

3. Smash Book and Inspiration Kit from Rutabaga Stuff. (The best thing about this one is that it comes with a whole pack of crafty bits and pieces to use in your journal!)

4. Vintage Camera Journal from Topaz Books.

5. Kite and Tree Journal from Two Guitars.

Oooohh it is so hard to resist a pretty notebook! I wish I could have them all!

I hope some of you have been getting your art journal on because I will be posting my attempt of the second challenge tomorrow... If any of you have had a go at the challenges - or just generally have some art journal pages you'd like to share - drop me a link or a picture, I'd love to see!
