The Happy List

The Happy List is back! I have got a backlog of lovely things I want to share, but here are some of my favourites from this week:

DIY// These little origami bows are so sweet! I can't wait to have a go at them (original instructions here).

FASHION// I am pining for my hair when it was long and red... although it never looked quite like this

ART// This site specific installation, "Bloom" by Anna Schuleit, at the MMHC is right up my street. Such a beautiful transformation of space.

JEWELS// I am obsessed with gorgeous earthy jewellery at the moment like this geode slice necklace from Glimmering Gems.

BLOG POST// Rebecca from Manzanita has kindly uploaded a really clear and helpful vlog on how to crochet a granny square!

Enjoy all the pretty things,

I Guest Posted...

The other day I guest posted over at Frankly Vic... She asked a few different bloggers to write about their environments and it was fun to see how everyone interpreted the topic. Vic is a lovely girl and has a great blog so I suggest you go check it out and give her some love!

Coconut Milkshake

I'm back! Scotland was so lovely, it's taken me a little while to get back into London living... But I'm back into the swing of things now and knee deep in fairy tale designs for the summer ball, so exciting! I'll be sharing more about that soon, but for now I thought I'd share a little experiment with you...

1 pint milk (we used semi skimmed)
2 scoops of vanilla ice-cream
1 chopped coconut (this could probably be more sensibly replaced with coconut milk or pre-bought flakes instead of wrestling with an actual coconut like we did...)
1 bounty bar
dark chocolate (just a little grated for the top)

And just blend it all together in your smoothie maker, blender, "jusshher", whatever you have that does the job... And that's that! Not the most sophisticated or healthy of recipes... but very tasty I can assure you.

Adventures in Scotland

It's been a tiny bit quiet on Pointless Pretty Things this week... And that is because I am off adventuring in Scotland! We are staying in the most beautiful lighthouse on the west coast and having a lovely time enjoying the country and seaside.

We first drove down the only road to the lighthouse in the spookiest fog I have ever seen - it was like we were in Sherlock Holmes!

There it is! Home Sweet Home for the week... I never want to leave!

Yesterday we walked along the coast to Portpatrick, the nearest little town. There were lots of exciting things along the way, and guess who was the only one to fall on her bottom! Oh noo....

I should probably stop uploading pictures now and save some for another time! I think I might have to just run away from London and stay here forever...

The Summer Ball

I'm just starting work on a very exciting event design for the summer: Central's Summer Ball at The Old Vic Tunnels! I just graduated from Central last year and now work at The Old Vic Tunnels, so to design the ball for my old university in my new workplace is a really fun opportunity for me.
Just to set the scene, the space is a vast expanse of tunnels underneath Waterloo station; dark, derelict, industrial and really atmospheric. I'm planning to transform the space into a world somewhere between A Midsummer Night's Dream and Grimms Fairytales... A dark enchanted forest.
My design is well underway, so I thought it might be fun to share some of my inspiration images as a bit of a teaser.

//from left: 1, 2, 3//

//from top: 1, 2, 3, 4//

//from top left: 1, 2, 3//

I can't wait to start making overgrown fairy-lit archways, collecting jars and hanging cotton bolls! This is my favourite way to design - to have so much freedom and such an amazing space is so rare, I'm going to make sure it is the best summer ball ever!
Oh... and I'm also thinking of making my dress roughly inspired by this BEAUTY (above) - thoughts?

DIY Felt iPhone Case

Remember this post showing some very beautiful iPhone cases? I had already ordered my own case by then (the retro cassette) but it STILL hasn't arrived!! I've been getting very impatient, and I'm a bit nervous taking my phone out unprotected, so I decided to make my own! Here's how I did it, it's very easy and only took an hour or so :)

YOU WILL NEED: Felt, buttons, sewing machine (or you could sew by hand), thread of a contrasting colour, fabric scissors.

1. Measure up the felt with your phone and decide what size to cut your felt... Remember to leave enough space to include the depth of your phone and add an extra 2cm for your scalloped edge. Mark your felt out with chalk and cut two equal sized pieces.

2. Sew the two pieces of felt together around three edges, leaving the opening free. Using fabric scissors carefully cut around to make your scalloped edge. The two layers of felt should make a nice structured finish.

3. Cut out a shape in a contrasting colour felt and sew it onto the inside of your nearly finished case to make a flap.

4. Choose two buttons and sew one on to the flap and one on to the front of the case. You can then use a length of embroidery thread or cord between the two buttons to keep the case closed.

And that's it! Now your phone is snug as a bug in a rug.

Art Journal Challenge #4 - The Result

Here is the latest art journal result for challenge #4... It's a simple one, but quite fun. I might use the same kind of thing to decorate the cover of my journal! The best part was squishing the pages together to print the dots on to the opposite page... so satisfying!

That's it for journal month (it's April already!) hope you've enjoyed it :) it's back to normal posting for me, and I have got a very exciting month planned including lots of DIYs which I am very excited to share... I am also planning starting an Ad Swap scheme, so watch this space!

Happy April Everyone!
